Fearful of provisions in a proposed homosexual 'marriage' bill in Washington D.C. which may require the Church to engage in activities contrary to her teachings, the Archdiocese of Washington has said it will be unable to continue its social service programs in the area. A spokesperson for the diocese said that "The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that's really a problem." Backlash from certain observers and the media has - not surprisingly - been harsh (including at least one charge of "blackmailing the city"). There appears to be no shortage of misguided persons who seriously expect the Church to act contrary to her own beliefs, even if the proposed end (helping those in need) is good. Is there any doubt that these same persons who think the Church should be obliged to go against her religious principles also claim they support "religious freedom"?
"It is never allowed, even for a good intention to do a thing that is bad in itself." (Baltimore Catechism)
