More News Highlights

More recent news highlights...

* The Diocese of Charlotte has agreed to pay a settlement of $1 million, plus thousands more for counseling, to an alleged abuse victim who had served as an altar boy

* Pro-lifers anticipate President Obama's announcement of a pro-abortion Supreme Court justice nominee "very soon", perhaps early next week or sooner. Included in the "short list" of candidates is at least one "radical abortion proponent"

* Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg, PA will celebrate 10 years of perpetual adoration on June 27 2010. Media coverage of the anniversary indicates that the experience of Eucharistic adoration ("our own private audience with the Lord") has beneficially impacted participants both spiritually and materially ("the crime rate reportedly goes down in communities with perpetual adoration chapels where people pray all the time") [Related: Holy Eucharist Reflections | Holy Eucharist / Mass]

* The "ever-ecumenical-except-when-it-comes-to-traditionalists" Cardinal Kasper has expressed his opinion on the ongoing Vatican-SSPX talks, saying that "dialogue with them is not easy." The "give-away-the-store-to-non-Catholics" Cardinal also - ironically - said he was for dialog with the SSPX on "our conditions, not on the traditionalists' conditions." Further, the Cardinal implied that the traditionalists maintained an 'immature identity' and supported a "petrified" tradition. [Commentary: Can anyone imagine Cardinal Kasper making similar comments regarding Jews or any non-Catholic group? Wouldn't such statements about them give the poor Cardinal a coronary?] Despite the Cardinal's comments, some have noted that he seems to have been "left out of the process", he himself admitting he had little input regarding the lifting of the excommunications which occurred last year. * A recent USA Today article bearing the title "Nuns, Nancy Pelosi are rock stars to progressive Catholics" has highlighted the role of Pelosi and liberal religious sisters in the recent passage of abortion-expanding healthcare legislation, despite opposition from the U.S. bishops [Commentary: 'Rock stars' to 'progressive Catholics'? Why not run an article covering what faithful Catholics think of those who call themselves Catholic while simultaneously supporting the murder of babies in the womb...e.g. "Liberal nuns, Nancy Pelosi are a scandal to faithful Catholics"]

* More on Pelosi: The self-professed Catholic Nancy Pelosi who supports abortion - but simultaneously claims she prays "morning and night" for the "poor hungry children of the world" and also claims the Catholic faith "informs her life" - is now calling on clergy to "instruct" parishioners to support immigration reform (read: amnesty). [Note the irony: Pelosi intentionally disregards the U.S. bishops' position against the abortion-expanding healthcare legislation and then urges the clergy to instruct Catholics on immigration legislation] [Related: Civics 101: Breaking the law is not okay]

* Catholic schools & lesbians in the news again: This time, a Jesuit-run institution, Marquette University, offered a dean position to an openly lesbian candidate and then revoked the offer after the candidate gave her acceptance. The university had apparently become aware of some of the lesbian's dissenting writings after making the offer. While the university is being praised by faithful Catholics for maintaining its Catholic identity, it is also being criticized for not properly vetting the candidate before making an offer.
