In a doctrinal note reprinted in L’Osservatore Romano, the Italian Cardinal Carlo Caffarra has spoken out against Catholics who support homosexual 'marriage'. The note said that "It’s impossible to consider oneself a Catholic if that person in one way or another recognizes same-sex marriage as a right" and noted that "It’s impossible for the Catholic faith and support for putting homosexual unions on equal footing with marriage to coexist in one’s conscience - the two contradict each other." The Cardinal confirmed that it is a "gravely immoral act" for a Catholic lawmaker to introduce a measure or vote for legislation that supports homosexual 'marriage'.
